Regional highlights
It is difficult to say what is most beautiful or most impressive in Zagreb, one of Europe's oldest cities and one of Europe's youngest capitals. Important dates in the life of the city include 1094 when the Zagreb diocese was founded (although there is evidence that the city is much older), 1242 when it was declared a free royal city, and 1557 when it was declared the capital of Croatia.
For some, the most recognizable part of Zagreb will be the Cathedral, for others the central Ban Josip Jelacic Square, or Zagreb's Louvre-the Mimara Museum. Some will remember Zagreb for its funicular, which has been linking the Upper and Lower Town for over a hundred years.
The old and new are also connected on the other side by the Kamenita vrata (Stone Gates), yet another feature on the Zagreb postcard.
In an evening suit or jeans, with a wish to see classical or modern productions - you will always find entertainment to suit your taste in this city's twenty theatres, the oldest of which is the Croatian National Theatre, founded more than a century ago. You can enjoy famous operas in their original language and listen to top musicians. Indeed, many started their artistic career in Zagreb and international fame, among them the distinguished pianist Ivo Pogorelic, opera diva Ruza Pospis - Baldani, and conductor Vjekoslav Sutej. For those who enjoy exploring museums, reading up on history or visiting galleries filled with the priceless works of foreign and local artists, Zagreb's forty or so museums and galleries will be a never - ending treasure. Zagreb is a highly rated centre for the production of animated films and has produced the prestigious Zagreb School of Animated Film, with the International Festival of Animated Films, which takes place in Zagreb every second year. It is also the site of many other international cultural events such as the International Folklore Festival, International Competition of Young Conductors, International Jazz Fair, Musical Biennial Zagreb, International Festival of Avant-garde Theatres, International Festival of Puppet Theatres and International Garden Exhibition.
